The best headlight conversion kit installation
Automotive Headlight Conversion Kit Installation Service near Iowa City IA: If you frequently drive at night, you probably appreciate the importance of visibility and illumination. While your vehicle may have headlights that work just fine, when you switch to LED headlights, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Not only do LED lights offer brighter lights and project beams farther, they’re also energy-efficient.
Believe it or not, it’s easy for the average driver to install LED headlights with a conversion kit. In fact, many kits pride themselves in their plug-and-play designs, which take 20 minutes or less for installation.
Considerations when choosing LED headlight conversion kits
Vehicle compatibility
Begin your search for an LED headlight conversion kit by looking up compatible kits for the make and model of your vehicle. Most manufacturers and some online retailers (like Amazon) provide detailed, user-friendly compatibility guides for your convenience. If you can’t find your vehicle in the chart, explore kits by a different manufacturer.
Power output
Power output refers to the brightness and evenness of a headlight’s beam. This information is expressed in lumens (lm). To put power output in perspective when comparing regular headlights and LED headlights, a 100-watt light bulb puts out 1,600 lumens, while a 100-watt LED bulb puts out 8,000.
Features
Materials
LED headlights are made with high-quality materials to last under a variety of conditions. The shell casing and heat sink are usually made of aluminum alloys, while the cooling fans are typically made of stainless steel. As heat is an ongoing concern with LED headlights, it’s recommended to steer clear of kits with non-metal components.
Cooling fans
LED headlights are equipped with cooling fans to keep heat under control. Their operation can be noisy to the point you can hear them in the car. Certain cooling fans may also cause interference with a vehicle’s instrument panel. These issues are more prevalent in inexpensive kits, which is why some drivers decide to spend more on kits that advertise quiet, no-interference cooling fans.
Heat sinks
Heat sinks in LED headlights create a pathway for heat to pass from the light source to the outside elements. Some kits have advanced heat sinks that don’t require cooling fans. While this sounds like a minor design feature, remember that cooling fans create noise and interference, and if you eliminate the cooling fan, you won’t experience these issues.
COB LED headlights
COB, or Chip-On-Board, means an LED chip is installed onto the circuit board. This is an energy-efficient design feature, as it reduces overall heat output by as much as 25%. By operating more efficiently, these LEDs offer longer lifespans.
Which one do I need?
You don’t have to choose between a relay harness and a CAN bus ballast. Because they are two separate parts, you can easily use both in your HID installation.
However, it is possible to install a HID conversion kit with a CAN bus ballast and not install a relay harness, as both function in a similar way. Many HID kits come with a CAN bus ballast and not a relay harness.
If you do choose to install a relay harness, be prepared to do a little extra work. You’ll have to install it to your car separately to the HID kit.
You’ll also need to keep in mind what your car is built to use. Not every car has a CANbus system factory fitted. If your car is older, it may not have a CAN bus system. This means a CAN bus ballast won’t work, and you’ll have to choose a HID conversion kit with a regular ballast.
If your HID kit does not come with a ballast, it’s highly recommended that you also install a relay harness. Going without either piece of equipment could do serious damage to your vehicle.
We offer a variety of HID conversion kits that come with CANbus ballasts, so you don’t have to purchase a relay harness.
How to Install HID Conversion Kit
Automotive Headlight Conversion Kit Installation Service near Iowa City IA: Many newer cars nowadays come with HID headlights as standard or as an added option. HID headlights give you more visibility so it makes driving at night much safer. If your car doesn’t come standard with HID headlights, you can always get an HID Conversion Kit from online marketplaces like Amazon to convert your headlights to HID. If you thought adding on HID headlights was extremely complicated, it’s actually pretty straightforward if you follow the directions.
Step 1:
Open your vehicle’s hood.
Step 2:
Open the back cap on the headlight assembly and take out the stock bulb. Do not touch the bulb’s glass with your finger. You can wear gloves as protection.
Step 3:
Insert the xenon light into the headlight housing. You have to be gentle when removing the plastic cap and remember not to touch the bulb. If you did, you can always use rubbing alcohol to clean.
Step 4:
Insert the xenon bulb into the headlight.
Step 5:
Connect the HID bulb with the ballast and connect the HID ballast back to the stock socket.
Step 6:
Test the HID light to see if it lights up. If not, flip the adapter 180 degrees.
Step 7:
Test the HID light to see if it lights up. If not, flip the adapter 180 degrees.
Step 8:
With this HID Conversion Kit, your headlights’ output will be much brighter and you’ll get a clean, crisp look. There is no heavy modification involved so converting to HID is a great upgrade, even for beginners.
Benefits Of HID Kits For Automobiles:
- Better Visibility.
One of the primary benefits that you are going to get with HID headlights is the fact that you are going to get improved visibility. This means that you are going to end up seeing more when you are riding on the road. This is going to make driving your motorcycle a lot safer than it would be without them. Improved visibility is going to allow you to have better overall reaction time in case you ever find yourself in an emergency situation.
- They Last Longer.
Another huge benefit of having HID headlights for your motorcycle is the fact that they are going to last a lot longer than halogen lights. Because HID headlights can last up to 3 times longer than traditional halogen lights, you are going to have to spend a lot less time worrying about your lights and maintaining them. Therefore, you will have more time to spend on your actual ride and enjoy your motorcycle for what it is.
- Lower Energy Consumption.
Because HID lights perform better in terms of energy usage, they are going to effectively utilize less energy than traditional bulbs. Because of this, it is going to be a lot better for your battery and even your electrical system over the long haul. If you have to utilize your lights for any extended period of time without your motor running, you are going to be able to do so without fearing your battery dying on you.
- They Simply Look Better.
Another benefit that a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy the most is the fact that they look better than halogen lights. The fact is, they are extremely crisp and white in appearance. Whereas, a halogen light gives off much more of a yellow tint. This can make your motorcycle look a lot better and cleaner. Because HID lights originally only came with luxury cars in the 90’s, they can have somewhat of a luxury appearance and status attached to them. Because of this, you are going to effectively be able to make your motorcycle look even better than it already is, and you are going to be able to make it have a much more premium look than if you stuck with halogen bulbs, Hope this article on HID kits for motorcycles helped if you’re on the fence, no go get you some!

COST
Cost to Automotive Headlight Conversion Kit Installation
Automotive Headlight Conversion Kit Installation Service near Iowa City IA: The cost to replace a bulb and headlight can vary greatly depending on the car’s make and model and whether you do the work yourself or have it done at a dealership or mechanic.
Enlow says the average cost he pays for a halogen bulb for a customer is $15 to $20. He charges $50 per headlight for installation.
According to aftermarket parts retailer AutoZone, the average cost of a halogen bulb is about $15 to $20, while HID bulbs typically cost $100 or more.
Addison says the average cost to replace an entire headlight assembly is $250 to $700.
Enlow recommends having both headlights replaced at the same time to avoid uneven light. Experts say that because headlights dim over time, it’s best to replace them when you notice they’re less effective, so they don’t completely burn out first.
Typically, detailers will use a fine-grain sandpaper to remove a thick layer of the plastic headlight cover. Following that, the surface is polished and protected with a sealant with UV protection.
The cost of headlight restoration is typically between $75 and $150 for both headlights, according to auto detailers.
Replacing a headlight
Replacing an entire headlight assembly is generally the same process regardless of the make and model of vehicle or whether you have a car, truck or SUV, Enlow says.
There are usually bolts around the perimeter of the headlight, sometimes two on the top and maybe one on the side, depending on the make and model, he says.
Oftentimes, he adds, the bolts on top are easily accessible; but the bolts on the bottom may require a tool to remove, such as a ratchet with a deep socket and extension. Most headlights also are attached with several fasteners, so you’ll want to make sure they’ve all been disconnected before you detach the headlight.
Either way, mechanics say drivers should consult their owner’s manual for specific directions.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Could I not just purchase a stronger watt halogen bulb to get a brighter light?
HID lamps are 35 watts while traditional halogen bulbs are 55 watts. Even though HID lamps draw less current, they produce 3 times the light output as the higher wattage halogen bulbs. Increasing the wattage will make the bulb a little brighter but still much dimmer than HID lamps.
Why can I not just replace the halogen bulb in my vehicle with HID lamps only without having to purchase the entire kit?
An HID Ballast is required to ignite the HID lamps. Automobiles currently use a 12 Volt electrical system for their headlamps. HID lighting systems require over 20,000 volts to ignite the bulbs. Once lit, they only require 12 volts to keep running. Our kits include a ballast with a built in power circuit that is necessary for the lamps to turn on. The input of the ballast is 12 volts.
What are the advantages of HID lighting systems over traditional halogen bulbs?
There are several advantages when comparing HID technology to halogen bulbs:
- A 35-Watt HID lighting system emits 3 times the lumens when compared to a 55-Watt halogen bulb.
- While the halogen light appears yellowish, the HID lighting system produces a light that is closer to that of natural sunlight.
- In most nighttime driving/bad weather situations, this combination of a whiter color and a greater light output allows for a safer and more illuminated drive.
- HID lighting systems draw significantly less power from your vehicle’s electrical system.
- HID lighting systems are designed to outlast your halogen bulbs. On average these bulbs will last 3-5 times longer than a traditional halogen bulb.
Could I Install the kit myself?
For anyone who has ever worked on a vehicle or is mechanically inclined, this installation is considered to be very easy. While a typical installation takes approximately an hour, it can vary depending on the vehicle. Our kits are ready to install right-out-of-the-box and come complete with everything that you will need.
In the event you run into any issues, please feel free to contact us directly for any and all question
How long will these bulbs last?
HID bulbs are made to last 3 to 5 years. They will run for approximately 2500 hours.
Is it possible to re-install the original halogen bulbs after the HID kit has been installed?
With many people leasing vehicles, a major concern is whether or not you can put the vehicle back to its original factory condition. Our lighting systems install with little to no modifications to your vehicle. If in the event you need to, the entire kit can be removed and the original halogen bulbs can be put back into your headlight housings. This kit can be re-installed into another vehicle that uses the same bulb size, or another bulb can be purchased to work with the existing ballast.
My HID conversion kit did not come with an installation guide. Where do I get one?
- The ballasts make electric noise when first turned on.
- This is very normal and nothing to worry about. The ballasts at initial startup are drawing power from the battery, which is why you hear electronic noise.
What does the HID Conversion Kit include?
Our HID Conversion Kits are made in Japan. The kit will include quality components that are designed to meet stringent quality standards. We will supply you with all of the necessary components and hardware to install this system into your vehicle. Each kit includes: 2 direct plug-in HID lamps, 2 ballasts and all necessary wiring, and a complete and easy to follow wiring diagram. (Some vehicles require a use of a flicker/canceller harness and/or battery harness, please contact us for details on whether your vehicle will need these)
Will daytime running lights (DRL) or Auto On switch affect the HID kit?
For vehicles with DRL that use the same bulb for both DRL and low beam you will need to deactivate your DRL. DRL operates on reduced wattage or fluctuating current levels. This will cause the HID system to flicker and burn out prematurely. If your DRL is used on the high beam bulb, upgrading your low beam to HID will not affect the DRL. Please ensure that your vehicle’s factory headlight harness is providing a constant 12V to ensure that no damage will be caused to the HID system.
Will I lose the function of High beams? Once I install an HID Conversion Kit?
For vehicles with bulb size H4/9003, H13/9008, 9004, and 9007 using a single bulb for both low and high beam, you will or will not lose your high beam functionality. H4/9003, 9004, 9007 will have HID low beam and a halogen high beam. H13/9008 comes only with low beam HID and will lose high beam.
